Why seeing a dentist who speaks Arabic matters

Dental treatment runs on consent. Before anything is done you should understand what is wrong, what the options are, what each one costs and what happens if you wait. That conversation is hard in a second language, and harder again when a relative is translating clinical words they have never used before.

• Describing pain accurately. Sharp or dull, throbbing at night, worse with cold, worse when you bite down — these details change the diagnosis. Saying them in Arabic helps us find the problem faster and treat the right tooth.
• Understanding the plan. We can go through your x-rays and treatment plan in Arabic, including what is urgent now and what can safely wait until later.
• Costs, health funds and Medicare. Item numbers, rebates, gap payments and government schemes are confusing in any language. We explain the figures, in Arabic if you prefer, before you agree to anything.
• Parents and grandparents. Many patients bring an older parent who is far more comfortable in Arabic than English. They can talk to the dentist directly instead of through someone else.
