Gingivitis or Periodontitis?
- Gingivitis is the early stage: red, puffy gums that bleed when you brush. It is reversible, usually within a couple of weeks of a professional clean and better brushing at home.
- Periodontitis is the advanced stage: the gum and bone that hold the teeth start to break down, causing gum recession, bad breath, loose teeth and eventually tooth loss. It cannot be reversed, but it can be stopped and controlled.
Gum disease is also linked with diabetes and heart disease, and smoking makes it both more likely and harder to treat.
What a Deep Clean Involves
- Measuring. We measure the pockets between your gums and teeth and take X-rays to check the bone.
- Deep cleaning. Tartar and bacteria are removed from below the gum line, under local anaesthetic where needed, often over two visits.
- Review. The gums are re-checked after a few weeks to see how they have healed.
- Maintenance. Regular scale and clean visits keep it under control.
