What Is Included in a Check-Up and Clean
- Examination. Teeth, gums, bite and existing fillings are checked, along with a look for anything unusual in the mouth.
- X-rays when needed. Usually every two years, or sooner if something needs a closer look.
- Scale. Hardened tartar is removed from above and below the gum line, where a toothbrush cannot reach.
- Polish and fluoride. Surface stains are polished away and fluoride is applied to strengthen the enamel.
- A plan. You are told what we found in plain English, what needs doing now and what can wait.
Preventive Dental Care That Saves Money
Most adults do well with a check-up and clean every six months. Smokers, people with diabetes and anyone with a history of gum disease may need one every three to four months. Small problems found early are quick and cheap to fix. The same problems found late mean root canals, crowns and extractions. Bleeding when you brush is the earliest sign of gum disease, and a clean is usually the first step in treating it.

A professional scale and clean removes surface stains from coffee, tea and tobacco, which can make teeth look noticeably brighter — but it does not change the natural underlying colour. For a brighter result, ask about our professional whitening.
How long does a scale and clean appointment take?
A standard scale and clean usually takes 30–45 minutes. If significant tartar buildup or gum issues are present we may recommend a longer appointment or split the work across two visits.
